In 2022, alarming statistics revealed that over a quarter of household fires occurred in homes without smoke alarms. More than half of household fires were detected early due to the presence of functional smoke detectors. That’s why, as of February 2022, Scotland introduced new regulations impacting property owners and landlords concerning heat and smoke detectors, heat alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Every residence must now feature interlinked smoke alarms, creating a network that triggers all alarms simultaneously in case of activation.
The specific requirements include:
- One smoke detector in the living room or the most frequently used room.
- One smoke alarm in each hallway and landing.
- One heat alarm in the kitchen.
- One smoke alarm in any adjoining garage or inhabited loft.
Additionally, the regulations mandate the installation of a carbon monoxide detector in any room with a carbon-fuelled appliance, like a gas fire or boiler.
