EV Home Chargers

Interest in electric vehicles has been steadily on the increase for quite some time and there are no signs of this interest declining any time soon. Reducing carbon emissions and lowering pollution levels are hot topics right now, with many of us looking for ways we can reduce our carbon footprint and play our part in safeguarding the environment for future generations. As a result, electric vehicles have become a popular choice for both domestic and commercial use – due to the fact that they emit far fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants over their life span compared to a petrol or diesel car.

Initial questions about EV chargers

But what about the manufacturing process? And the generation of electricity required to fuel electric vehicles? How green is this energy production?

There’s no escaping the fact that making electric cars does require a lot of energy. The emissions created during the manufacturing of an electric car tend to be a bit higher than a conventional car – primarily due to the making of lithium-ion batteries, which are an essential part of any electric car. However, over the car’s lifetime, an electric car still produces fewer emissions than a traditional car. Because they don’t have a tailpipe, pure electric cars don’t produce any carbon dioxide emissions when driving, reducing air pollution considerably and making a lasting, clean impact on the towns and cities they are driven in.

Our EV charging services

At Keith Gunn Electrical Solutions, we’re very passionate about contributing to this environmental movement and have dedicated a lot of time and energy into becoming OLEV approved EV installers, meaning we are now fully accredited and qualified to install electric vehicle charge points for domestic dwellings (EVHS) and commercial dwellings (WCS).

Being an official OLEV and Pod Point approved home charge installer means we are now able to install Pod Point’s UK leading Solo Home charger for electric vehicles. Fast, smart, and with Wi-Fi enabled, the 7kW Pod Point Solo charges your vehicle up to 3x faster than a standard 3-pin plug. As it is compatible with all plug-in vehicles, the Solo charger is available with either a universal socket or tethered Type 2 cable. The Wi-Fi feature also enables you to view all your charging activity and associated costs, whilst also offering remote support and over-the-air software updates that can enhance the performance of your charge point. The free 3-year warranty that comes with the charging point is also a great added bonus!

We are truly thrilled to have achieved this accreditation but are even more delighted to share that by obtaining this accreditation we are able to provide our customers with access to EV government grants and incentives.

What grants and incentives am I eligible for?

Along with our trusted partner, Pod Point, we believe that travel shouldn’t damage the earth. But we also believe that making the necessary steps towards this goal shouldn’t break the bank. We want to help people adopt clean transport in their everyday lives. We not only install EV charging stations but also give our customers access to the OLEV Grant –  a government grant for electric car home chargers, provided by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV).

The OLEV Grant, known as the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), provides up to £350 off the cost of purchasing & installing a home charging point from 1st April 2020. Available for most electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars, old or new, this grant can be claimed against one charge point per eligible vehicle and up to two eligible vehicles per household.

Furthermore, an additional grant of up to £300 is available to Scottish EV drivers via the Energy Savings Trust Scotland.

How do I qualify for OLEV’s grant?

To qualify for OLEV’s grant for EV home chargers, you need to have leased an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle for at least six months or have purchased one on or after 1st October 2016 onwards.

You also must have off-street parking, you must install an OLEV-approved charge point (like Pod Point, which we can install), and the date of installation must not be more than 4 months ahead of the date of delivery or date you become the registered driver of the electric vehicle.

What about workplace EV charging points?

Fortunately, these incentives are not just reserved for domestic dwellings. OLEV also offers a separate Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant that can be claimed by any business, charity, or public authority and used to reduce the cost of installing electric vehicle charge points for their staff by up to £14,000. It provides up to £350 off the cost of purchasing and installing a workplace charging point, up to 40 sockets.

How does my business qualify?

The Workplace Charging Scheme is available to any business, charity, or public authority, with a few conditions, which include having sufficient off-street parking, express an existing or future need for the business to incorporate electric vehicles as a part of your fleet, and having the charging station installed by an OLEV-approved workplace charging station installer, (again, like Pod Point).

How do I claim these grants and incentives?

If you’re interested in looking into how you or your business can reduce their carbon footprint by switching to electric vehicles, then give the Keith Gunn team a call. We can help talk you through the whole process and point you in the right direction for applying to the grants and incentives available to you when having your EV charger installed.
